"I Think China will Naturally Become a Soccer Power": Former Manchester City Player

"I think China will naturally become a soccer power," said former Manchester City defender Sun Jihai, who was accompanying Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Manchester City Football Group on Friday. Talking about the club as well as Chinese football in an interview with China Central Televison on Friday, Sun said he felt glad for the changes of Manchester City when he was back as the club's ambassador to China. He believed that the club is worthy visiting and Xi's visit will promote the communication between China and the UK on Football. "Manchester City has changed a lot. There are good youth training facilities and the club may be the best in the UK since it has achieved great records both in the Premier League and on the European field. With more investment, I think the club will keep getting better. Also, thanks to the president for visiting Manchester City and I believe that the communication between China and the UK on football will improve and the club will also make contributions to China," said Sun. As a Chinese football player who played for the club from 2002 to 2008, Sun has experienced different football systems in the two countries and expressed his opinions on the current situation of Chinese football. "I hope more people will pay attention to Chinese football as well as participating in it. Also, there should be more football fields and excellent coaches. These are the most important factors for the development of football, and also the factors which China seems to have but is actually lacking. If these conditions can meet the standard for a soccer power, I think China will naturally become a soccer power," he said. During his visit to Manchester City on Friday, Xi presented to Sun the award of being included in the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame. Sun said he is greatly encouraged by this honor. "This is an incredible honor for me as well as a big encouragement. In the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame, there are many excellent and even legendary football players who have been my examples and are now my goals in the future," he said.
