On page 3 it states, "...a network camera that complies with any of the given HDTV standards is guaranteed to provide a certain resolution, frame rate and color fidelity, thereby ensuring video quality at all times." The truth be told, this information is completely false. In this tutorial we prove that the HDTV standard cannot and does not ensure video quality in an IP camera system. In fact the video quality between manufacturers of HDTV IP cameras varies significantly. Why do they vary? It comes down to the hardware components used, and the manufacturer's level of competence in the implementation of the H.264 codec. This will ultimately determine the final video quality. The problem is the method of implementation and competence differs between the manufacturers. For example, H.264 is an open standard, which is often marketed by IP camera manufacturers as an assurance of high quality video. However, there are 17 profiles within the H.264 standard, each differing in its capabilities. Interestingly, there are differing of opinions amongst IP camera manufacturers as to which profile is best. A profile used by one manufacturer will be deemed totally inappropriate by another. Compounding the problem is that each manufacturer has their own implementation method for each profile, further contributing to the variance in "HDTV quality".
