| Better than a Double Rainbow: Maintaining and Supporting Perl Apps in the Cloud - Steven Nunnaly |
Many Perl-based applications require the ability to quickly scale with the ebb and flow of providing services to their clients. I work on a cloud-based, automated testing application called Tellurium (http://www.te52.com) that allows users to write tests in a natural language script called PBehave. In order to support a larger client base we are using Amazon Web Service. We can support this growth using Amazon Web Services (AWS), where we can startup and shutdown new instances at will to cover the needs of our clients cost-efficiently. How do we maintain and support these various instances to handle the traffic to the website and run the automated tests? We use tools like Git, Puppet, RabbitMQ, rsyslog and AWS to release new features and bug fixes weekly with down time that often lasts less than 15 seconds. With these tools, our app gains redundancy, scalability, flexibility, and cost efficiency.
