Alan Shearer rattled in a first-half hat-trick in a crazy 12-minute spell in front of the Gallowgate End to chalk up an emphatic 4-0 half-time lead. Just a minute into the second half and the day got even better for Newcastle as Kieron Dyer weaved his way through and netted his first goal under Sir Bobby Robson. Gary Speed chipped in with number six on 78 minutes, but Newcastle and Shearer were far from finished. Big Al hit his fourth with nine minutes left and when referee Neale Barry pointed to the spot two minutes later, the hunger of Shearer to score goals for United well and truly shone through. With four in the bag already, the England skipper was always favourite to take the penalty that was about to make it 8-0. Youngster Paul Robinson grabbed the ball in a desperate bid to score his first senior goal. However, Shearer simply pushed Robinson away before slamming it home.
